Sergeant E-5

Vietnam War - Merong Delta Region

7/1968 - 7/1969

Mr. Kramer was drafted in January of 1968 and headed off to Fort Benning, GA. He was ready to go because he knew it was just a matter of time til he would be called up. Listen to this clip where he shares his family military history:

Most of Mr.Kramer's service time was spent in Vietnam in the infantry where he learned quickly the importance of keeping his wits about him. He was part of the Ninth Infantry Division, Mobile Wolverine Force in the Mekong Delta. It was difficult to befriend fellow soldiers because people were constantly being shifted in and out of country. When Mr. Kramer chose to go to sniper school a change in this situation occurred. He explains how he has continued to keep contact with some of those friends:

When returning home from Vietnam, there were mixed receptions. He recalls flying into some of the larger airports where people spit on them and threw items at them while at some of the smaller, hometown-type airports there was fanfare and parades. It was an emotional roller coaster at times. He is glad that he had the opportunity to serve his country. He states " we have to appreciate what we have as citizens" and he does!
